Myocardial coefficient of oxygen utilization.

چکیده

THE COEFFICIENT of oxygen utilization is defined as the arteriovenous difference in oxygen concentration divided by the concentration of oxygen in the arterial blood. Multiplication of the ratio by 100 converts the coefficient into the per cent of arterial oxygen which is removed by the tissue. The term "oxygen extraction ratio" is frequently used as a synonym. Conflicting reports have appeared in the literature concerning the relationship between the arterial oxygen content and the myocardial coefficient of oxygen utilization. Feinberg et al. have reported a positive relationship, while Hackel and co-workers found a consistent inverse relationship between arterial oxygen content and the coefficient of oxygen utilization during hypoxemia. Both groups used dogs as the experimental animal, but different methods of measuring coronary flow were employed. In the normal range of arterial oxygen values no correlation appeared to exist. Some investigators, however, have been impressed with the constancy of the coefficient under certain experimental conditions and have used this value as an index of coronary flow. Since the published reports disagree on the relationship of arterial oxygen content to the coefficient of utilization, it may be unwise to use the latter value as an index of coronary flow. In view of the discrepancies found in the literature, a re-examination of the pertinent factors, particularly coronary flow, blood oxygen values, and estimated myocardial oxygen consumption, has been undertaken.

The effect of oxygen inhalation on cardiac biomarkers in patients presenting with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infraction: A randomized clinical trial

Background: It is assumed giving oxygen to patients with acute myocardial infraction may increase the oxygenation of the ischemic tissue; however, the usefulness of oxygen in these patients has become a challenging topic. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the effect of oxygen inhalation on cardiac biomarkers in patients with acute myocardial infarction.    Methods: This randomized cli...

Effects of isoproterenol on carbohydrate metabolism of isolated canine heart.

• Early studies of the effects of epinephrine on the isolated and metabolically supported canine heart demonstrated increases in heart rate, contractile force, and myocardial oxygen consumption. The increases in myocardial oxygen consumption following epinephrine administration were roughly proportional to the increase in heart rate. In heart-lung preparations epinephrine administration resulte...

The Hemodynamic Effects of Drugs on Myocardial Oxygen Use

The circulatory responses to high equinalgesic doses of morphine are compared with those of pethidin. The decrease in mean arterial blood pressure in case of morphine was 28p.c., with a paralleled and identical decrease in total peripheral resistance and no negative inotropic effects.  Pethidine decreased blood pressure 54p.c., as a result of peripheral vasodilation of 46p.c. and a sharp drop...

50th anniversary historical article. Myocardial oxygen consumption: the quest for its determinants and some clinical fallout.

The factors that control the consumption of oxygen and utilization of energy by the heart have been of interest to cardiovascular physiologists and clinicians for many years. The determinants of myocardial oxygen consumption (MV̇O2) have warranted this careful consideration since, in the presence of steady state conditions and with the obligatory aerobic nature of myocardial metabolism, MV̇O2 ser...

Myocardial tissue oxygen supply and utilization during coronary artery bypass surgery: evidence of microvascular no-reflow.

The supply and utilization of oxygen by the myocardium reflect the dynamic efficiency of the microcirculation. The present study examines these parameters during coronary artery bypass surgery. We used a voltammetric microelectrode technique to assess regional variations in myocardial tissue partial pressure of oxygen (PO(2)) and myocardial tissue perfusion (MTP) in patients undergoing coronary...
